Wealthy financier and registered sex offender Jeffrey Epstein has reportedly been found injured on the floor of his prison cell.
It is as yet unknown whether the disgraced businessman had been assaulted or if he attempted suicide.
Epstein pleaded guilty to soliciting prostitution from a child in 2008 and is due to face charges over allegedly running a child sex ring.
He pleaded not guilty to the latest charges and is currently in a New York prison ahead of his trial.
NBC New York reports that Epstein was discovered semi-conscious in a fetal position in his Manhattan jail cell, with marks on his neck.
Two sources told NBC that Epstein had tried to hang himself, however a third said his injuries were not serious and questioned whether it was an attempt to secure a prison transfer.
A fourth source told the broadcaster that the lag may have been assaulted, adding that another inmate had been questioned.
Epstein is now on a suicide watch list in Metropolitan Correctional Center, according to NBC.
The 66-year-old American apparently attempted suicide in prison at around 1.30am on Tuesday, according to celebrity gossip website Radar Online, which broke the story.
The website claims Epstein was involved in a medical emergency in prison, citing one source who said it was an attempted suicide.
Epstein was once a friend of the rich and famous, with former celebrity pals including US President Donald Trump and even Prince Andrew.
Footage of Donald Trump partying with Epstein emerged earlier this month showing the two men discussing women before the now-president pats one on the bum.
The video shows Trump chatting to Epstein at a November 1992 party as the men leer at cheerleaders - who were not minors - from the Buffalo Bills American football team.
At one point Trump is seen pointing at one of the women saying “she’s hot” before whispering in Epstein’s ear making him bend over double laughing uncontrollably.

There is no suggestion the cheerleaders were involved with Epstein or Trump.
The tape was filmed more than a decade before Epstein pleaded guilty to felony prostitution charges in Florida.
At one point in the video, wild-haired Trump is seen grabbing a woman towards him and patting her behind.
