En medio del pueblo había una ermita rural con su espadaña entre cuatro paredes enjalbegadas.
Fray Junípero Serra un humilde franciscano cojo y todo porque pisó un escajo y se le gangrenó la pierna llegó hasta casi Oregón. Solía decir aquel pobre fraile menor en su lengua menorquina “donde irá el buey que no are”.

Nuestros historiadores siguiendo la pauta marcada por los anglosajones no hacen semblanzas sino caricaturas de aquellos esforzados capitanes, soldados, nautas, científicos estudiantes de la flora o la fauna de América, o simples misioneros.
La palabra “conquistadores” tiene connotaciones peyorativas, casi denigrantes, en el idioma de Shakespeare.
Debían de estar locos aquellos tíos que cruzaron ríos a nado o pegaron brincos como el de Alvarado al descubrir el cañón del Colorado en una de sus primeras incursiones den los Estados Unidos que ellos creían que será una isla. Posteriormente cuando bajé hasta la Florida y me encontré con el fuerte de San Agustín allí levantado para defender a la población indígena de los bucaneros ingleses y de echar fuera de aquellos territorios a los hugonotes del almirante Coligny esta fascinación fue creciendo al estudiar la biografía de Hernando de Soto y sobre todo del Adelantado Pedro Menéndez de Avilés el asturiano que era el mejor navegante de su tiempo (condujo la expedición del rey Felipe II en sus nupcias reales con María Tudor y navegó aquellos mares vigilante de la flota lanera que iba desde Laredo hasta Flandes).

Se sabe que su expedición de descubierta de la Florida fue realizada en tres secciones; zarpó una de Cádiz, otra de Avilés, otra de Laredo y otra la Concha de Artedo una playa con mucho abrigo y donde había atarazanas de los carpinteros de ribera hoy desaparecidas.
En cualquier caso don Pedro Menéndez de Avilés resulta una figura poco conocida y minusvalorada entre nosotros, por aquello de la Leyenda Negra pero al que honran todos los años en Tampa y en Pensacola y en toda la Florida, el segundo estado más grande de la Unión, el día de San Agustín 28 de agosto.
En honor al santo patrón de Avilés bautizó la nueva ciudad bajo su advocación.

Die Lichtpunkte der Discokugel flimmern über die Gäste, Frauen mit hohen Absätzen und Männer mit Militäruniformen, Goldketten und breiten Schultern gießen sich in einer Sofaecke den ersten Wodka ein. Es ist Freitagabend in Donezk, kurz vor elf Uhr im Club S&S, in wenigen Minuten tritt die Ausgangssperre in Kraft. Der Nachtklub ist als einziger übrig geblieben in der vom Krieg zerrissenen Stadt. Die ukrainischen Streitkräfte befinden sich in den Vororten, die Separatisten kontrollieren das Zentrum.
Der Konflikt brach im Frühjahr 2014 aus und hat bereits rund zehntausend Menschen das Leben gekostet. Die Granaten fliegen Tag und Nacht. Zivilisten und Soldaten sterben weiterhin auf beiden Seiten der Frontlinie.
Unter der Discokugel scheint die gefährliche Lage vergessen. Auf einer kleinen Bühne läuft eine Karaoke-Show. Die Stimmung steigt, immer mehr Klubgäste singen die russischen Popklassiker mit. Der Barmann reicht eine beschlagende Flasche Artjomowsk über die Theke.

Creed On Sundays and certain Feasts the priest recites the Creed, a summary of the Catholic Doctrine. This profession of faith was drawn up in the General Councils of Nicaea in 325 and Constantinople in 381 to condemn heretics who denied that Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost were God. Then, with his hands joined upon the Altar, and slightly bowing down, he says: Accept us, O Lord, in the spirit of humility and contrition of heart, and grant that the sacrifice which we offer this day in Thy sight may be pleasing to Thee, O Lord God. Raising his eyes towards heaven, extending and then joining his hands, the priest makes the Sign of the Cross over the host and the chalice, while he invokes the Holy Spirit. Then he holds out the Chalice to the server -- in Solemn Masses to the deacon -- who pours wine into it for the first ablution, then the priest proceeds: May Thy Body, O Lord, which I have received, and Thy Blood which I have drunk, cleave to my bowels; and grant that no stain of sin may remain in me, who have been fed with this pure and holy Sacrament; Who livest and reignest for ever and ever.
